Like most of the characters in Maud's books, Q was also based on a real person. Q the Girl Columnist and Q's Corner were based on "Quentin's Column," a column on the back page of the Minneapolis Tribune, written by Clara Chapline Thomas. This was at a time when the back page of the one-section Trib was second only in importance to the front page, and the whole page was pretty much hers. The column ended well before Delos worked at the Tribune, but Maud later met "Quentin," who was by that time known as Darragh Aldrich.

Clara Chapline Thomas was born December 31, 1877, in Indiana, but by 5 years old her family had moved to Minneapolis. She completed her graduate work at the University of Minnesota in 1900. While at the U of M she wrote for both The Gopher and The Daily.
